The part about salons being interrupted and social media becoming the new salon really stuck with me, since so much of what we learned about curls came from figuring it out at home. Knowing your own curl pattern, density and porosity before you buy is what saves the most money, and I've been using Curltine's photo hair scan to get a read on those things without booking a consult. What's the one thing you'd tell someone to check at home before buying a new product?
The aunties section is the part every independent stylist should read twice. Clients aren’t really comparing prices, they’re comparing how many separate line items it takes to get to one finished head of hair, and whether anybody was warm to them along the way. The rates are earned. The menu is where some of us lose the room.
100%, customer service is so central to business in general - it’s a shame that it’s become something that almost has to be begged for rather than given.
Begged for is exactly it. And the stylists who do give it freely rarely get credit for it, because warmth doesn't show up as a line on the receipt. Thank you for writing the piece — and for the restack.
